What Is Digital Scrapbooking?

You have probably been hearing about the latest buzz - digital scrapbooking. What is it anyway? Instead of scrapbooking using paper, adhesives, and stamps, digital scrapbooking can be done entirely on the computer. This is achieved by using programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Jasc Paint Shop Pro, or Photoshop Elements. I’m sure you have even seen the computer programs made especially for digital scrapbooking.

What’s the hype? Well, there are actually a lot of advantages to digital scrapbooking - which would make any religious paper crafter gasp. Digital scrapbooking allows unlimited space for storage. We have all been to the point where we can’t fit even another brad into our scrap space before it all comes tumbling to the ground. With your computer, you can store all of your photos, layouts, albums, and tools right in your hard drive. Along with aiding in organization and space saving, digital scrapbooking is a big money saver as well. When you begin, you would need to invest in the following:

1. a computer (if you don’t already have one)

2. CD burner (to burn all of your layouts/albums onto a CD)

3. software (a program to help you create your digital masterpieces)

4. a scanner or digital camera (to transfer photos to your PC)

You may look at this list and groan at the thought of the total cost that will ring up on the register, but these are all one-time purchases. How many times have we had to buy more glue dots, more vellum, or that new tool out on the market that we just can’t live without?

We know these facts won’t impress every paper crafter out there, but maybe they will help us realize that there is room for digital scrapping within the world of paper crafting.
